Family Yoga Follow Up
It has been a few weeks now since I posted the original family yoga post. Initially, I wanted to try family yoga and meditation as a way to help reduce anxiety and promote relaxation and better sleep habits. We successfully did some form of yoga or meditation for a full week and we learned a lot from it.
The kids liked yoga but could totally leave the meditation. I enjoyed the complete silence of meditation the most (surprise). Jon's knee can't take the length of time that some of the postures require so we had to modify our routines a bit.
Some days I don't feel like being the ring leader of yoga and I just don't feel like doing it at all. Callie doesn't necessarily participate much anymore, nor does Jon. Henry, on the other hand, has found a new routine that he is learning to depend upon and I love it! My whole point was to give the kids another tool in their toolbox for self regulation and relaxation and it has become something important to Henry. He says the one night he skipped yoga it was very difficult for him to relax and fall asleep. Knowing that he now has this technique that he can use whenever he needs to is worth all of the efforts. He makes sure that every single night he does his favorite yoga routine and even has it memorized. It is 10 minutes of slow stretching and concentrated breathing and you better believe he turns off all the lights and lights some candles to enhance the relaxation. He is now the prime leader in making sure there is always bedtime yoga happening in our home.
This new routine and intentional anchor was totally worth it and I am looking forward to exploring it more. Also, it is much easier to be motivated when my 11 year old is the one "cracking the whip" on the whole thing.
